Otoplasty
This procedure is used to reshape the ear. The term is used to describe the correction of the prominent ear by setting
the ears back closer to the head.
Usually I wait until the child is at least 5 years of age before performing surgery.
Generally the procedure is done under sedation in adults and general anesthesia in children.
I approach the ear through a posterior(back) incision so that the scars are not visible.
Initially a bulky dressing is used for a few days. A head band is used to protect the ear after for a few weeks. I ask the
patient not to participate in contact sports or gym for 6 weeks after the surgery.
The procedure takes about 2 hours.
I favor using sutures(stiches) on the upper part of the eat to fold the ear back rather the cutting any of the cartilage.
The lower part of the ear, the bowl of the ear which is referred to as the concha may need stiches as well if it sticks out
too much. Lastly the bottom of the ear referred to as the lobule may need to be corrected as well.
