As a volunteer spokesperson for the American Cancer
Society, Dr McLaughlin has been a commited
community advocate, frequently hosting educational
seminars to broaden public awareness of skin cancer.
A featured speaker on channel 12 News Long Island,
Dr. McLaughlin comments, "the earlier  a lesion is
diagnosed the better the survival". Dr. McLaughlin
performs excisions and when necessary,
reconstructive surgery of the soft tissue defects.
We usually discuss three different types of skin
cancer;
Basal cell Carcinoma which usually does not spread to
other parts of the body but can be disfiguring if left
alone. Basal cell may be difficult to diagnose in its
early stages. It may appear as a patch that is irritated
or a reddened area.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma which can spread to other
parts of the body. It is usually red and may be
ulcerated. Some patients describe a wound that has
not healed.
Melanoma is the most deadliest it will spread to other
parts of the body if not found early enough.

The ACS recommends monthly self examinations
